Reflections on the Coronavirus Situation

Updated: Sep 4, 2020

  1. Have we fully appreciated the irony of the situation? There are those who say there is no God, or I cannot give God control, because we cannot feel, touch, or see Him. Yet they give their lives and routines to a virus they cannot feel, touch, or see. Yet the Lord is so much more powerful than a virus, and can be known, where a virus cannot. (cf. Romans 1:18-32; Colossians 1:16-17; Hebrews 11:3)

  2. A lot of Donald Trump supporters are old time Democrats, who when confronted with a crisis, still turn to fascistic policies and prolific debt spending, just as they did prior to World War 2; and just as modern Democrats would do on any day. There are very few, as a percentage, who remain committed to the founding principles of the Republic. If one abandons principles in the midst of crisis, they are not principles, but merely justifications for something. Did Bernie bail on the presidential race because he realized he has already won in principle? Isn’t it ironic that people were afraid of martial law with Barack Obama, and it is more likely to happen, and has happened in part, under Donald Trump? And did we not call Barack Obama a socialist for a $850 billion stimulus? It’s amazing what percentage of people think they are exempt from the laws of mathematics.

  3. I have heard it espoused by some leaders in the last several years, the thinking that the church revolves around the “campus” and we don’t need any “keyboard warriors”. Although this situation has demonstrated the falseness of that position, I hear very little apology or repentance of this wrong teaching. Only a very quiet acceptance of a new normal, which like mentioned above, were not principles, but justifications of a way of doing things. (1 Corinthians 12:20-22). As far as to beIng oriented around the campus, these same people sheepishly comply but make no question of why the same isn’t applied to grocery stores and home improvement stores. Indeed many small businesses and churches will be forced into extreme financial hardship or bankruptcy. I maintain that this is intentional and by design.

  4. People are indeed turning to the Scriptures to figure out what is going on. What is not helping is the quoting of verses out of context to justify our positions. Exposition should come first, not reading one’s interpretations into the text.

  5. There is no difference in the people and the economy. Trashing the economy to save health is a non sequitur. Eventually a bad economy and poverty will kill the very persons trying to be saved. In addition, more casualties will be created other than the high-risk for a particular health condition.
