Today we had a walking tour of “Weltstadt” Kreuzberg. The western lead government started to demolish the community. When the residents started to realize what was happening, they formed a grass roots committee to prevent more destruction of the old neighborhood that they were content to live in.
We saw an interesting sculpture of an admiral (of which there were two), standing on top of an hourglass, with his spyglass, looking in all directions; and there were two “modern” or “punk” people sitting on the bottom.
Then we went to the Antonio Amadeu Stiftung, which is a society designed to combat the neo-nazi’s and right wing violence. They offer a program called EXIT, that helps those who want to get out of right wing extremism. However, they appear to be rather obscure and there appears to be a strong lack of civic organizations and civil society to mobilize on this issue; I believe that portends problems for the future.
