Today we saw the Pragerstraße. It is socialist architecture. It is a very wide street. However, capitalism has now moved in and has built newer more modern structures. Then we went and saw “Mythos Dresden”. It showed Dresden before, during, and after the bombing. I saw a disturbing picture of a couple sitting on a park bench holding hands. They looked like they were instantly incinerated. The exhibit counters the myth that Dresden was an “innocent” city. They had a picture of a class of about 20-25 and only 5 were not Hitler youth. They also had pictures of the city wrapped in Nazi garb. It also showed that the city did have industry, and that the industry was not specifically attacked. Rather, the soul of the city, the Frauenkirche, was attacked. They have done a fantastic job rebuilding it. It is built of Limestone. The original building materials are dark with the age of the Limestone and bombing. However the new limestone is very light and in 20-30 years will change color to almost match. I think this is very appropriate. It implies that, yes, a tragedy did happen but new history can be made and eventually it will blend in with the overall ebb and flow of history. However, when I saw the pictures of throngs of people around the undisturbed rubble, that was equally moving.
